If there is no difference I can use the extra 100 for ammo or other parts for the 870. In fact I have a steel trigger group in my 870.

Remington 870 metal trigger guard. Were 870s ever made with a steel trigger guard. Does anyone make one currently. Seems like I remember Brownells carried some kind of replacement years ago.
Im not sure what it was made of. My Remington 870 is a SPS Super Mag turkey gun. I bought the metal housing trigger guard online and comparing it to my plastic trigger guard they both appear identical in dimension and appearance other than one is plastic and the other is metal.
I tested the metal trigger guard and it appears to pass every safety function. The Remington 870 trigger group was always powdered compressed aluminum or later plastic on the Express line. Compressed aluminum is used on the Wingmaster and Police model.
Remington never offered a steel trigger guard unit for the 870. There was a company that made a steel trigger guard unit with fully adjustable triggers. The standard 870 trigger guards all have totally different factory part numbers then the Super Mag models.
The aluminum 870 trigger guard unit is made of compressed powdered aluminum not an aluminum forging or even casting. They arent nearly as strong as thought. The plastic guard has the advantages of no finish to wear off if its bumped.

About 500 rounds through my 870 in 20 gauge and maybe 3000 through a 11-87 in 12 gauge. No problems so far. UV light and some solvents beat up plastic parts.
Your guns dont see enough light to get damaged via UV. I remove the barrel from the gun to clean my 870s and 11-87 shotguns so they dont see much solvent on the trigger group. The trigger guard does seem like pot metal texture.
I purchased a metal Remington trigger group in 2008 for an 870 Tactical Magnum and it looked identical to the polymer trigger guard. This one seems like a cheaper version and is obviously not polymer. It could be from the early days of MIM and is a metal trigger guard just not a great one.

My 870 Express has a real steel trigger guard not compressed metal like the 870P. It was one of the first 870 Express models made in 1987. The only difference between it and a good old fashioned 870 Wingmaster is the cheaper finish.
I like steel. In fact I have a steel trigger group in my 870. It is a Timney all steel trigger.
Timney did these for both 870 and 1100. I owned several of the 1100 all steel triggers. Somewhere along the way those got separated from me.

An extra shell can be an advantage in certain. The maverick 88 has an aluminum receiver and a plastic trigger guard. The mossberg 500 has an aluminum receiver and trigger guard.
The mossberg 590 appeared to be all steel. I was surprised you advised the Remington 870 trigger guard was plastic as their earlier models were not. The only thing I could find that wasnt up to spec was on the trigger guard of the Remington 870.
It looks like the old metal trigger guard has been replaced with a new plastic version and there was some leftover material behind the trigger that I could easily remove with.
